Frequently Asked Questions

What is a maternal fetal medicine specialist?

Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists care for two patients at the same time—a mother and her baby in the womb. We partner with the mom-to-be, her family, and her care providers to navigate un-routine or high-risk pregnancies. Our ultimate goal is to achieve the best possible outcome for mom and baby

Do I still see my OB-GYN if I go to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist?

Depending on the unique needs of your pregnancy, you may or may not continue to visit your OB-GYN, but they will continue to be involved during your pregnancy. You may have only one consultation with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist and then return to your OB-GYN for the remainder of your pregnancy. In some instances, you OB-GYN will strictly monitor your status and provide consultation.

When should I see a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist?

If your OB-GYN believes you are at risk for complications during your pregnancy, they will refer you to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist.

Risk factors for high-risk pregnancy include

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Prior C-section
  • History of pre-term pregnancies
  • Chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and epilepsy
  • Complications during pregnancy such as a lack or excess or amniotic fluid, or restricted fetal growth

How do I know if I’m at risk for pre-term birth?

Fifty percent of women who deliver pre-term exhibit risk factors, the other fifty percent have no known risk factors. Contractions may be the first predictor of pre-term birth, but they are often a false positive marker. If you have previously delivered a baby pre-term, it may be recommended that you receive hormone treatment. Progesterone hormone treatment could help prevent 30 percent of recurrent spontaneous pre-term births. Additionally, high intake of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet or with supplementation may also help prevent a recurrence of spontaneous preterm birth in at-risk patients.

What are the benefits of detecting fetal anomalies?

Congenital abnormalities affecting babies' health are relatively uncommon, occurring in approximately 3-5% of all pregnancies. Some of these abnormalities maybe isolated and affect only one part of the body, and others may be more complex syndromes and diseases. Chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Trisomy 13, and Trisomy 18, have become more prevalent as the age of the mother increases. The earlier fetal anomalies are detected, the earlier the Maternal-Fetal medicine team is able to prepare for the type of care the baby will require once he/she is  born. Depending on the type of anomaly, some babies may receive treatment while they are still in the womb.
